In this lecture, Dr. Mary Kuhns will present on the natural history of the Hepatitis B virus; discuss HBV biomarkers; and examine the importance of viral genotypes, preS/S mutations, and pre-core mutations.

Dr Kuhns is Director of Infectious Diseases Research with Abbott Diagnostics Division. Dr Kuhns is an expert in hepatitis viruses with over 30 years of experience in the research and development of molecular assays and immunoassays for diagnostics and blood screening. Prior to her current role, she was Director of Infectious Diseases Global Scientific Affairs and was a Visiting Scientist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris where she performed research on hepatitis B. She received her PhD in Developmental Biology and Microbiology from the Ohio State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Human Genetics, Yale University School of Medicine. Her publications include more than 75 peer reviewed papers in leading scientific journals and numerous educational mono graphs on hepatitis viruses and retroviruses.
