Course Description

In this lecture, Eva Quinley introduces those who may not have formal laboratory training to the basic principles involved in testing, or it can serve as a refresher for anyone who works in the testing laboratory. It familiarizes participants with important definitions of testing and sets a foundation for their understanding of how testing is conducted from collection of the sample all the way through to reporting of results.

  • Define the 3 major phases of laboratory testing and key points which must be considered, including a discussion of common errors in each phase

Eva D. Quinley is a highly accomplished healthcare executive and consultant with nearly five decades of experience in transfusion medicine, plasma operations, quality systems, and global regulatory affairs. She is recognized as a senior leader in blood banking and source plasma, with deep expertise spanning FDA and international regulatory oversight, laboratory operations, quality management systems, and organizational leadership. She has held multiple C-suite and senior executive roles, including Senior Director at CSL Plasma, Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer roles at both the American Red Cross and New York Blood Center, and CEO-equivalent regional leadership roles at Vitalant/LifeSource. Her experience includes oversight of large, complex organizations, global regulatory engagement, direct management of laboratories with 100+ staff, and stewardship of multimillion-dollar budgets. Currently, she serves as an Independent Consultant (2024–present), providing global advisory support in transfusion medicine, plasma, quality, regulatory compliance, operations, leadership development, and professional training. Eva brings a strong academic and educational foundation, holding an MS in Healthcare Administration and Education and multiple lifetime certifications, including Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB), Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), and Clinical Laboratory Scientist. She has served as tenured faculty at the University of Tennessee and remains an active educator, speaker, and author. She is a nationally and internationally recognized thought leader, with extensive publications (including editor and author of Immunohematology: Principles and Practice and authoring chapters for the AABB Technical Manual and for Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis), frequent invited presentations, and long-standing leadership within professional organizations such as AABB (chair of the Accreditation Committee), PPTA, and TABB (including service as TABB President).
